Senior Dog Health and Holistic Support
Senior dog health issues can vary from the type of dog you have and the type of lifestyle it has lived. Many smaller dogs often have longer lives than larger breeds, but all of this can be supported with natural dog health lifestyle techniques. However, according to The Complete Holistic Dog Book, by Jan Allegretti, there was once an “Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey who was reported to have achieved the ripe old age of 29 years!” Common Signs To Look For As Your Dog AgesStiffness and Slowness-Especially when getting up in the morning is common, but should be checked to make sure your dog is not in chronic pain from arthritis or another illness.
-Fish Oil is an amazing supplement to bring down inflammation that contributes to arthritis. Also eliminate corn from the diet as this has had links to arthritis.Skin Sensitivity-Once again Fish Oil supplements can really help this as some senior dog health issues arise with skin problems. Also, regular brushing and grooming releases the natural oils in your pets skin and stimulates detoxification as well. I often find that Virgin Coconut Oil mixed with Calendula Oil or cream can really help any sores, bites, or scrapes.
Uncommon Aggression-Some senior dogs can show uncommon aggression and this can sometimes be due to an area in their body that is in pain. The aggression can be a warning symbol especially to children not to touch them. Definitely get your pet checked by your vet to make sure they are not hurting or something else is wrong. Weakness in the Kidneys and Liver=More Drug Sensitivity- After years of use, many pets are more prone digestive and detoxification difficulties. Once again an amazing diet with raw ground veggies and no refined carbohydrates like corn, white rice, or potatoes can really help. Decreased Eyesight -Bilberry Extract at 20-100mg/Daily depending on your pets size. Vitamins A, E, zinc, and blueberries have great antioxidants to help this and can be an excellent addition to your pets diet. Talk to your vet about homeopathy and Chinese herbs. Many of these can really help. Hearing LossMuscle Weakness/ Arthritis- Regular gentle exercise, an anti-inflammatory diet or homemade diet can really help this along with vitamin supplements especially Fish Oil, B Complex, Coenzyme Q10, MSM.Separation Anxiety-Some older dogs show signs of nervousness or insecurity as they get older. There are many great homeopathy supplements like Bach Rescue Remedy that can help. Also, Valerian or short term use of Kava Kava. Be sure to check with your Holistic Vet who is experience in these herbs.
